These thumbcuffs are a compact, portable, and easy to use restraining device for all levels of law enforcement including police and security. Made of durable, nickel-plated steel and resembling a much smaller pair of traditional handcuffs, these are actually designed to fit around the thumbs, particularly below the knuckles. In this more unfamiliar and uncomfortable position, the detained suspect’s hands are forced to remain close together either in front of their waist or behind their back at these sensitive, more easily injured joints. This helps to reduce the risk of tampering with the cuffs, grabbing at officers, and attempts to steal and use firearms, batons, or tasers that may be greater possibilities when all five digits are completely free in a pair of traditional handcuffs. A detained suspect may also be less inclined to escape on foot while wearing thumbcuffs, as the more restrictive position the cuffs impose can make it more difficult to use their hands or arms to balance their body, and thus harder to run fast.
